ABOUT GOOGLE ANITA BORG SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FEMALE BACHELORS, MASTERS & PhD STUDENTS FROM AFRICA, EUROPE & MIDDLE EAST

One of the dreams that earmarked the Anita Borg scholarships for females, was the passion in Dr Anita Borg to promote science technology among women. This initiative was forthput, under the “50/50” by 2020; that women earning computing degrees would be 50% of the graduates by year 2020. The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship for Europe, the Middle East and Africa promotes the ideas of Anita and then wants to engage students from all walks of life to address technological issues for gender equality. Through the scholarship, Google aims to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders in this field. The scholarship provides £ 7,000 for the academic year.

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE GOOGLE ANITA BORG SCHOLARSHIPS

To be eligible to apply for the Google Anita Borg scholarships, applicants must;

  1. Be a female student currently enrolled at a university or Is about getting enrolled or accepted as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD program at a university in Europe, the Middle East or Africa.
  2. Be studying any of the courses listed below:
  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering
  • Informatics or a similar technical field course
  1. Keep up a good academic record

 

HOW ARE CANDIDATES SELECTED FOR THE ANITA BORG SCHOLARSHIPS?

Similar to other scholarships in Nigeria, scholarships are given on the basis of academic strength and the underlying passion for increasing the involvement of women in computer science, and overt leadership skills.

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR GOOGLE ANITA BORG SCHOLARSHIP

If you are a first time user, you will need to register. If you are already registered, simply log in.

  1. The applicant is required to complete the online application form and submit all requested documents.
  2. The applicant will receive an email notification once the application is complete and has been submitted online.
  3. All application documents must be in English.
  4.  You will also be asked to submit electronic versions of your CV, essay responses, transcripts, and the name and email address
    of your reference.
  5. Please scan your transcripts into electronic format (PDF format preferred).

 

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE GOOGLE ANITA BORG SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

  • An up-to-date copy of your CV
  • Answers to the following questions (Suggested word count is 400-600 words per question. You should treat question 1 and 3 as technical reports or research papers):
  1. Report a major technical project you have worked on before. If you have worked on a major independent research project such as research for a Master’s or PhD programme, talk about it in details.
  2. Give an overview of the problem and your approaches to the main technical challenges. If this was a group effort, be sure to detail your individual role and contributions.
  3. Give some examples of the leadership abilities you possess and elucidate the influence you had while on it. Talk about what you were trying to achieve.
  4.  Be sure to think broadly and examine the diverse ways you impact members of your technical community.
  5.  Write a short version of a proposal, including a description of the project, your planned methodology, and your expected results. Please pick something other than the project you described for the first question.
  • Transcripts:
    Bachelors: A copy of your current academic record.
    Masters: A copy of your previous and current academic records.
    Phd: A copy of your previous academic records.
  • Attach to your application letter an official enrollment confirmation or a confirmation of your graduation date issued by an official authority of the university e.g. your departmental administrator or a professor.
  • Recommendation letters
  • Two strong referral letters from individuals who are qualified to give an overview of your academic and leadership accomplishments, e.g. from a professor, adviser or supervisor.
